National Apprenticeship Week – Celebrating Our Team

At FermionX, we have ambitious goals for the future of our training and internal upskilling programmes. As a family run business, it has always been at the heart of what we do. Furthermore, we’re proud to support local community incentives in offering apprenticeships and job opportunities to those local to our HQ in Worthing.  Therefore, in honour of National Apprenticeship Week, we thought we’d take the time to shine a light on one of our team members.

Dominic Groom joined the FermionX team as a Business Administration apprentice in 2019. Organised through Sigta Ltd, he embarked on an 18 month qualification with us. We’re proud to say he not only passed – he got a distinction. Not one to boast about his achievements, we decided to do it for him. So, here’s what he had to say…

Dominic Groom - TeamCan you give a brief description of what the apprenticeship entails?

To pass my apprenticeship I was required to pass three stages. Firstly, there’s the knowledge test, as the name suggests this a test on the knowledge that you require to be a business administrator.

Secondly, the portfolio interview, my portfolio is something I worked on throughout my apprenticeship and it contains all of the skills and behaviours I had shown throughout my day-to-day work to prove I was capable.

Finally, there’s the project presentation, my project was about how I had improved a process within the Fermionx ways of working.

What was it that appealed to you about working in manufacturing, particularly the electronics industry?

What appealed to me about working in manufacturing was being involved first hand in the creation of products and learning how something can go from just a simple idea to a fully sellable/marketable product.

In addition to this, it is the level of innovation and modernisation that takes place. There seems to be a constant conveyor-belt of new ideas and new methods, and learning about all of them can be very inspiring.

Describe your day-to-day roles and responsibilities?

My day-to-day responsibilities consist of working on customer quotations for the manufacturing of there PCBA requirements. While also processing orders and keeping in contact with customers regarding their manufacturing requirements or answering any questions they may have.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

The elements I enjoy most about my role is the variety of what I could be working on. Because of the wide range of customer’s that we work with, and the many different industries they belong to, there’s always something new and exciting to delve into.

And finally, what are your goals for 2021 and beyond at FermionX?

Looking forward my goals are to keep building my knowledge of the electronics manufacturing industry and of the work we do here at Fermionx. I would like to gain some further technical knowledge and also further my understanding of what it takes to build a successful product/brand.

Commercial Director, Will Patrick added:

Dom has become such a valuable asset to the team. From the outset he showed the knowledge, capability and hard-working attributes we value so highly here. It helps he’s got a great sense of humour here and fits in very well. As a business we’re really proud of how far he’s come and look forward to seeing what the future holds for him.
